Ypsi Farmers & Gardeners Oral History Project

Lisa Bashert

Lisa Bashert, born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, had very early interactions within agriculture, working on her sister’s truck farm from the age of 10 to 20 years old and harvesting a variety of crops. Lisa came to Ypsilanti in 1985, obtaining her bachelors in Anthropology from University of Michigan. Lisa worked as a beekeeper for over a decade, and is a strong believer in Cooperative economics. She conceives of Ypsilanti as her Eco-village. Lisa has participated in extensive Co-op work as the co-founder of CORY (the Cooperative Orchard of Ypsilanti), the Ypsilanti Growers Co-op, and worked/volunteered at the Ypsilanti Food Co-op for many years. Currently Lisa is a mother and grandmother, bee advocate, and serves as a co-steward at Recreation Park Community Garden. Lisa enjoys singing and is the founder and co-leader of Women with Wings West chorus.
